Exploring the Intersections. Serving the Margins.

The Minority Vets Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Summit is a full-day experience, delving into the intersections of the minority veteran identity and the key issues that impact our worlds and lived experiences the most. The day will feature lectures, panels, fireside chats, lightning talks and live performances by minority veterans and lead activists, artists, experts, and legislators.  Come explore, in-depth, the experiences of veterans who’ve existed on the margins of the traditional military veteran archetype and our intersections with poverty, the justice system, corporate culture, public policy, and more. In addition to educational and artistic material, the Summit will feature a live recruitment, hiring, and resource fair for minority vets seeking employment and services.

The Minority Vets Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Summit is presented in partnership with Amazon and Johnson & Johnson and is a kickoff the Minority Vets Emerging Leaders Program All funds and sponsorships from this Summit support the growth, development, and empowerment of the minority veteran community.

EMPLOYMENT & RESOURCE FAIR

Has your employment been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic? You're not alone! The Equity, Inclusion and Justice Summit will include a hiring and resource fair for those who have been impacted by the pandemic or are looking for employment. Employers include Amazon, Johnson & Johnson, Comcast, and more! Booths will contain resources, information, and contacts of employees and service providers. This will be available for a month following the event. Each booth will be live from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm EST and will be staffed by employees and volunteers who will be available to answer your questions.

Summit Kickoff 

Kickoff the Summit with the Team at Minority Vets as we discuss the purpose of the Summit, why equity, inclusion, and justice are so important in the veteran community, and the work that Minority Vets does on a national scale, and in local communities.

General Session 1

Minority Veterans and Public Policy

Public policy impacts the daily lives of everyone in our country. Minority veterans have faced decades of discrimination that has been reinforced systemically by legislation and public policies that perpetuate harm on our communities. In this panel, we will discuss the current landscape of public policy with regards to minority veterans, examine discriminatory policies, and discuss the fight ahead to create a more equitable and just society for minority veterans.

Breakout Session 1

Session A: Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Basics

At MVA, we are committed to changing the narrative of the American veteran to include minority and underrepresented veterans. We do this by bringing together Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) veterans, womxn, LGBTQ, and religious minority veterans to build a common sense of belonging. We use the fundamental values of equity, inclusion, intersectionality, advocacy, and education to guide our work. This session will be a conversation about equity, inclusion, and justice and how these things impact you and your organization and how MVA can help with your equity goals. Equity, justice, and inclusion work must be dynamic and sustainable as the ills it seeks to address are myriad and omnipresent.

Session B: Intersectional Movement Building 

Minority Vets is not just an organization - it is an intersectional movement of veterans working to create change in our community for generations to come. Our work is done using through the lens of intersectional movement building that seeks to bring together people from differing backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences to create a collective voice for change. Learn more about intersectional movement building and the value of this approach in the movement for collective liberation in this session.

Breakout Session 2

Session A: Minority Veterans and Corporate Culture 

After service, minority veterans return to the workplace, sometimes beginning corporate careers. The transition from military to civilian is challenging and entering an unfamiliar corporate world as a minority and as a veteran presents additional challenges. Join us for a discussion with minority veterans at major corporations on their transition from military to corporate environment, and how they survived and thrived in the workplace.  

Session B: Military Sexual Trauma: Digital Harassment & the Impacts of Social Media 

Military Sexual Trauma (MST) is a pervasive issue across the Department of Defense. It negatively impacts servicemembers while on active duty, and oftentimes continues to after separation from service. MST disproportionately impacts women, LGBTQ service members, and especially women of color and of lower ranks, both in person and online. In our virtual age, social media and technology have lead to an increase in digital harassment and stalking. In this panel, we will discuss the rise of digital harassment, scandals like Marines United, how social media has impacted the epidemic of MST, and the legislative work being done to end digital harassment.

General Session 2

Minority Veterans and Poverty 

This session will boast an in-depth panel discussion around the structural causes of poverty, oppression and the systemic effects both have on minority veterans, and the impact poverty has on recruitment and service across all branches. The session will also explore the decision to serve and the ways in which poverty informs multi-generational family service and the belief in the ability to escape poverty and elevating socio-economic through service. Finally, the session will conclude with a call to action around addressing economic disparities for the fastest-growing contingency of economically insecure veterans—namely, single parents, a majority of whom are women, and Black, Indigenous, veterans of color.

Breakout Session 3

Session A: Intersectionality as a Framework for Serving Minority Veterans 

Our nation’s military forces are increasingly more diverse by the generation as the number of women, people of color, and LGBTQ service members continue to grow. This change in actively serving forces is creating a ripple effect as our veteran population grows increasingly diverse. With this change comes a deep need for changing and transforming the ways in which we understand and serve minority veterans. This session uses intersectionality theory to examine the impacts that identity and the intersections of oppression have on the veteran community along with challenges and opportunities for growth. 

Session B: Justice-Involved Minority Veterans 

Over half of justice-involved veterans experience either substance use and abuse issues or mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, or PTSD. In fact, justice-involved veterans have higher rates of behavioral health struggles (substance abuse and mental health) while also being more likely than nonveterans to be incarcerated. It is also known that holding a minority status (LGBTQ, Black, Indigenous, or people of color [BIPOC], religious minority) can also impact those experiences. Join us for a dynamic conversation panel regarding justice-involved minority veterans.

Lightning Talks 

Two simultaneous Lightning Talk sessions with minority veterans discussing the issues and topics that matter most to them. Each speaker will be given 10 minutes to speak on subjects including radical healing, the power of community, and more.
